My parents married at a young age, and have a successful marriage. I think I have have some sort of guard up preventing myself from seeing Tim as anything more than a very close friend. As his relationship patterns are the opposite of mine, a part of me fears that if we were to really date, one of us might wind up getting hurt. We also have a tight group of friends, and I think we are both afraid to compromise that.
Is there anything that you want to do differently? In my work and other aspects of life, I am uncomfortable with comfortable. But when it comes to relationships, I do seek secure relationships that are clearly defined. I know I should relax and open myself up to vulnerability, so I can learn to enjoy dating more in the future. Tim insisted on being a gentleman and paying for dinner, which was very sweet of him, but I want to get the next one. We both teach Wednesday nights, so we went out to dinner after class to the Fat Raddish. Jessie brought me a little care package of stuff to jokingly get me through the next 40 days.
And she remembered that I like Clif Bars! Did you learn anything new about Jessica? We talked about our families more than we ever did before. Earlier in the day I sent a little note to Jessie by messenger. I wanted to honor our project together with something lighthearted. Well, she and I ended up talking about this Forty Days of Dating project the entire time. Not exactly what I was anticipating. She was very excited. She thinks Jessie and I are going to fall in love.
She texted me later that night:. We went to our first couples therapy session together. I go to therapy on my own, and have always enjoyed it. Life passes by so quickly, and I like having an hour a week to reflect in an attempt to learn and grow from it all. She asked us straight away if Tim and I were attracted to each other. After some awkward glances, we both admitted that we do find each other attractive.
Tim immediately rattled out numerous reasons:. He loves the freedom of the single life. He sees it as a weakness that I love love.
'40 Days of Dating' teaches nothing about relationships and everything about hipster New York
I learned early on that money does not make me happy. There are actually statistics that show that salary increase only make people happier until basic needs of food and water are met. Tim seems extremely overwhelmed by the idea of having to see me every day for this project. He almost had a panic attack when I sent him a list of date ideas for the next week!
I do love to plan things and have a schedule. However, I also greatly enjoy spontaneity. So far so good. In therapy we talked about how I am extremely picky about who I date. However, when I do decide I really like someone, I am quick to jump into a relationship in order to test it out and see how it goes. I really enjoyed reading the book and could see myself flipping through it again in future. For those who want to see updates on Jessica and Zak, see: Mar 24, Sarah rated it it was amazing. I'd already read the blog but knew that I wanted more.
And boy, did I get more I find myself a little more each time I read through the experiment: But the second time around, I identified much more with Tim. This came as somewhat of a shock seeing as the first and second read through were maybe two weeks apart; nothing major had happened i I'd already read the blog but knew that I wanted more.
This came as somewhat of a shock seeing as the first and second read through were maybe two weeks apart; nothing major had happened in my life between then and now. I wish all my friends would read this already so I'll have someone to talk to! But even more so, I hope this would strike a chord with the man who broke my heart. We're both on both sides. Also, the layout of this book is so genius I can't even describe it.
It perfectly matches how my brain processes information and didn't feel complicated at all which I know plenty of my friends would complain about if they would ever even pick up a book. This is an amazing study in sociopsychology, and I will carry it with me for the rest of my life. I'm also grateful I read it while single; I'm pretty sure my analyses of this experiment would make any man run for the hills. Oct 23, Hi rated it really liked it. I randomly came across this book never having heard of the blog.
To rate this book I need to divide it into two sections. The 40 days male female perspective, and the follow up.
40 Days of Dating: An Experiment by Jessica Walsh
For me the 2nd half carries the book. I went to the blog after reading the book, and the blog stops on day The book picks right up and cries on till about a year later. It also has friends thoughts on love in brief commentaries. They were so funny. While I really liked the book, I have to say by day 10 I was ready to t I randomly came across this book never having heard of the blog.
While I really liked the book, I have to say by day 10 I was ready to toss it! By day 15, I was aiming at a window.

By day 20 I'm like finally. If you feel the book is to slow at first I say jump to day 15, if after reading to day 17 you still feel the same go to day 28 and go from there. If you are still feeling like no skip to day 37, The follow up is much better than the blog diary imho. Here is the thing while I am giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. I have to say it felt really slow to get started. I always end up having to finish a book once I start, in this case thank goodness.
By day 28 I was hooked. The follow up 2nd section for me made it all worth it! Mar 09, Nicole rated it liked it. I first read around the first half of 40 Days of Dating on the http: Earlier this year, I found out that it was published into a book, which is nice. So I got myself a copy of the ebook. Overall, I think the concept works better on the website than the ebook. The formatting is sometimes off, and I can be nitpick-y about this on the ebook, at least; I can't say for sure how the printed book looks like.
You also can't view the videos d I first read around the first half of 40 Days of Dating on the http: You also can't view the videos duh , which are an excellent part of the project. However, I did like how there are additional things like the interviews with both Jess and Tim, and other people at the beginning of the book that you won't see on the site. Still, the core of the project is still there. I really enjoyed reading the journal entries and the side comments from Jess and Tim! I feel like they became my friends after reading their thoughts on very personal things, like intimacy and childhood.
If I'd give a Goodreads rating for the website, it would be 4 even 4. But the ebook only gets 3.

Apr 07, Lena rated it really liked it. This book is so different than any other I've read-- in its presentation and its subject matter, it kept me guessing from start to finish. I don't want to give anything away to those of you who may want to read it, but it is essentially this: Two long time friends are tired of being unsuccessful in the daring world, so they decide to date each other for 40 days.
There were six rules designed to force them to spend time together, create intimacy of all types, not just emotional or physical , and This book is so different than any other I've read-- in its presentation and its subject matter, it kept me guessing from start to finish. There were six rules designed to force them to spend time together, create intimacy of all types, not just emotional or physical , and keep them committed to the experiment. It was so fascinating to see the different perspectives men and women have about the same experiences. I loved that aspect-- that each day was presented like a journal from both Tim and Jessie.
Add in the screenshots of emails, texts, and other related documents, and you've got me hooked. It took me four hours to devour this book-- and watch all the related videos online. Dec 03, Rachel L rated it it was amazing Shelves: An interesting read that does a great job at examining the differences in dating between men and women. Jessie and Tim reflect on their dating habits and develop an awareness of their strengths and weaknesses in relationships.
In addition, the book offers insights into how two people's perception of a situation and one another can be so similar yet different and sometimes faulty. This was just extremely entertaining in an American hipster kind of way - the format was creative beyond expectations- definitely my favourite part! I knew about Sagmeisterwalsh from before, rather on Stefan's behalf but had little info on Jessica as a creative. I am wildly impressed and excited by all the design details, seriously!
As for the content, it felt like snooping into someone's diary, but the kind of diary a person would leave lying around for another to read They raise some quest This was just extremely entertaining in an American hipster kind of way - the format was creative beyond expectations- definitely my favourite part! They raise some questions, answer none, at points it feel like I'm 'hanging out', at other times as if I'm holding a chic-lit, identifying with the characters, wondering where is it heading.
Overall, fun, enjoyable, honest to the bone! Mar 05, Cloris rated it it was amazing Shelves: A gorgeously designed book that sheds light on modern dating. The journal entries by JW and TG are honest: The subtleties and complex conventions about dating in a fast-paced city like New York can be generalized to any globalized countries. Several times I rolled by eyes so hard they nearly fell out of my head. Walsh and Goodman had the wherewithal to hold back the last four posts, so until recently, we could only see how they got on up to date A new post went up every day last week, with date 40 going up on Friday to much fanfare.
We finally found out how their weekend away a trip to Disneyland went down, and more importantly, if they stayed together after the experiment. More on that in a moment. So, did the pair stay together? That said, the ending is so well timed and poetic — they part ways at But, does it actually tell us anything about relationships? Take, for example, this sample final thought from Walsh on Day We are so wrong for each other in so many ways, and so right for each other in many other ways.
I could never take their experiences and apply them to my own — mainly because I would never conduct my life in such a painfully earnest, verbose way. Find your perfect match.
